In-frame vs Shaker kitchens, what is the difference?

If you’ve been searching for traditional kitchen inspiration, you’ve probably come across two styles of kitchen.

In-frame and Shaker.

They can look similar at a glance, but structurally and stylistically, they are quite different.

Understanding those differences makes choosing the right one a lot easier.

What is an in-frame kitchen?

In-frame kitchens are defined by their framed cabinetry. Unlike standard doors that sit at the front of the cabinet, an in-frame kitchen has a fixed frame around each unit, with the doors neatly sitting inside it.

This construction gives in-frame kitchens a solid, crafted feel. The visible frame adds depth and detail, which is why they are often associated with traditional or classic interiors, although they can look surprisingly modern when styled well.

One of the biggest advantages of in-frame kitchens is their design versatility. The framed construction allows for decorative features such as ornate cornices, moulded plinths and detailed pilasters. These elements create a bespoke, handcrafted look that feels timeless rather than trend-led.

It is worth noting that in-frame kitchens are usually more expensive than other styles. Each cabinet frame takes up around 36mm more space than shaker or handleless designs, making them best suited to larger rooms. That said, many homeowners feel the craftsmanship, durability and enduring style more than justify the investment.

What is a Shaker kitchen?

Shaker kitchens use a lay-on door without a surrounding frame, resulting in a cleaner, more streamlined appearance. The defining feature is the simple five-piece door with a recessed centre panel, a design that has stood the test of time for good reason.

Shaker kitchens are incredibly versatile and can be styled to suit both traditional and modern tastes. For a classic look, think warm wood finishes, soft neutral colours and heritage-inspired handles. If a more contemporary feel appeals, bold colours, sleek quartz worktops and even handleless options can transform a Shaker kitchen into something strikingly modern.

Another big advantage of Shaker kitchens is value. Whatever your budget, there is a Shaker kitchen to match it. From high-quality entry-level ranges through to fully bespoke designs, they offer exceptional flexibility without compromising on style.

In-frame vs Shaker, which should you choose?

Both styles have their strengths. In-frame kitchens feel substantial and enduring, with beautiful detailing and a strong sense of craftsmanship. Shaker kitchens are simpler, adaptable and easier to tailor to changing tastes over time.

Choosing between the two often comes down to what you value most. If you love refined detail, bespoke touches and a truly traditional feel, an in-frame kitchen may be the perfect fit. If you want something versatile, budget-friendly and endlessly adaptable, a Shaker kitchen is hard to beat.

Either way, both styles have earned their place as kitchen classics, and with the right design, both can look right at home in a modern British kitchen.
